RULES OF THE ROAD FOR CYCLISTS

A HELMET IS REQUIRED.
* Ride single file except when passing
* Prior to passing another cyclist, check behind you for traffic. Always pass to the LEFT of bicycles you are overtaking. All riders must say "ON THE LEFT" when passing other riders
* Stay as far to the right as practical
* No headsets covering both ears are allowed
* Obey ALL traffic laws (i.e.: stop for stop signs and red lights, etc.)
HAND SIGNALS (using the LEFT hand)
* Left turn - Extend arm straight out
* Right turn - Hold arm out at a 90-degree angle (your shoulder to your elbow horizontal to the ground, with your hand and forearm pointing straight up in the air)
* Slow Down/Stop - Hold arm out at a 90-degree angle, but the reverse of the right turn. Your hand should point down to the ground.
* When making a left turn, check for traffic behind you, pull out into the left lane and after completing the turn, move into the right-hand lane as soon as possible
EQUIPMENT CHECK
* Check out your brakes and shifting mechanisms thoroughly before the ride, or have a qualified mechanic do so
* Carry a spare tube, patch kit, tire levers and a pump (that fits your bike's valves) on all rides
COCOA POWDER TIRE TRICK (Let us know if it works!)
* A puncture in your bicycle tire? When you are repairing it, pour in about a teaspoon of cocoa powder through the valve hole. The next time the tire gets a puncture while you're out riding, the air rushing out will draw the powder with it and quickly choke the hole, giving you only a slow leak. As a consequence, rather than having to push the bike home for repairs, you will be able to replace the air lost in the initial rush and ride back.

Bicycles are viewed and treated the same as other vehicles under California law.

Specifically for Solvang Trip

Make sure that your gear is in shape. Scouts (and any parents who want to ride) should have a bicycle that fits them, at least 5 speeds, and in good working order. Make sure the tires will last the trip, and bring along a repair kit in case they don't. Also, anyone going on the ride must have a bicycle helmet on at all times. If you're concerned about the condition of your bike, you can take it to Helen's (Broadway & 25th St.) or elsewhere for a tune-up.

If you have any questions about cycling or the trip, ask around the troop - there are plenty of people with cycling experience.
